Cabo San Lucas, Mexico: A Rare Phenomenon At Land’s End…

We were some of the lucky ones….

After our trip to Cayo Largo, Cuba (https://talesoftravel.ca/2024/12/01/our-first-trip-cayo-largo-cuba-crabs-beaches-and-more/) the year prior we realized we had contracted something that is apparently very contagious and it wasn’t the stomach issues that plagued Lidija upon our arrival home. It was something a lot more costly than that and we have been told that we are infected for life.

Yes, we had caught the TRAVEL BUG!

Symptoms include:

  • Strong realizations that there is so much to see in this world (technical term – Wanderlust)
  • “Irrational” spending habits that become easily rationalized
  • Intense cravings for exotic food and drink
  • Uncontrollable impulses to live in flip-flops and Tommy Bahama shirts
  • Overuse of annoying sayings such as “you only live once” and “treat yourself”

Treatment: Feed the Travel Bug as often as you can, it really is that simple!

So this time around we fed the Travel Bug with a noticeable upgrade to our travels and booked a 7 night stay at the Riu Palace in Cabo. Coming from a 4* resort in Cuba to a 5* resort in Cabo was the fuel the Travel Bug needed but it also led to another unforeseen consequence which I will get to later…

The grounds, the infinity pools, the swim-up bars, the food, the drinks (Hello Don Julio…where had you been all my life until this point!) and the nightlife were all far superior to what we had experienced in Cuba (Cuba still takes the cake for its beaches though).

We also partook in a lot more excursions and activities this time around:

Parasailing was a neat experience and extremely peaceful despite my apprehension of heights AND open water. We did enjoy it but it is not something we have done since.

Snorkeling. Another first for me if you don’t include the times in the bathtub as a kid! Took my breathe away (literally) the first time I tried to get my head underwater but I got the hang of it. Soon I was diving under to get up close to the fish which then figuratively took my breathe away!

No underwater camera so this is the best you get :-p

Nightlife – We had a few trips into town both during the day and the night. If you have never been, Cabo San Lucan felt very safe overall and is also more “Westernized” and we never felt too worried out and about at night. One night was particularly memorable. where we had hit the town with a “resort friend” we had made. Forgot his name but he was a Marine from South Carolina and was flying solo. First stop was the famed Cabo Wabo Cantina. We had already been there for a lunch the day prior but came back to kick off the night out.

Some drinking and dancing occurred before we moved on to explore some other nightlife options. We stumbled upon the self-proclaimed “World’s Smallest Bar” @Slim’s Elbow Room (www.slimscabo.com) and apparently had some tequila shots…

And it appears we ended the night at “Cabo’s Best Bar” aptly named Happy Endings (https://happyendingcantina.com/). It must have been a good night as even Lidija got up on stage to dance (typically that’s more of an Anthony thing to do!).

Get a good look, this doesn’t happen often!

Despite the ridiculous fun had by all, I honestly do remember most of this night all these years later (I am sure the pictures do help to jog that memory). What I remember even more though was the next morning. We had been accustomed to seeing our “resort friend” everyday at breakfast leading up to this point…however on this morning he was nowhere to be found! Uh oh! Fortunately, he did make an appearance at lunch and was very obviously a little worse for wear. It appears that Mister Marine had a hard time keeping up with us feisty Canadians…lol!

Ok, now onto the final chapter. Circling back to the mystery I hope I left with the title, let’s get into the RARE PHENOMENOM.

This was completely unplanned and unknown to us even at the time but we were fortunate enough to have had our trip at a time when we could….

WALK UNDER EL ARCO (“The Arch”)

Apparently this is a rare and somewhat unpredictable time when the Pacific Ocean tides are lower and/or has pushed up enough sand under the Arch. Stories vary and somewhat conflict, but upon some research this event only happens every 4-6 years and may only last for a couple weeks at a time.

Not bad for our SECOND TRIP, we are pretty much PROS at this point, right?

Oh, and that unforeseen consequence of this trip that I alluded to earlier….

Well, let’s just say that we came back just over one year later for…..

STAY TUNED! (maybe you want to subscribe so you don’t miss out…?)

Have you ever been to Cabo San Lucas? Could you walk under the Arch? Let us know a story down in the comments
